| Dugong Beach, Cid Harbour, Whitsundays is on the western side of Whitsunday Island. Camping and bushwalking are popular here. The best way to get here is by boat, either with a camping ferry or by cruising the area in a bareboat or crewed charter. |
| Dugong Inlet on the north side of Cid Harbour was named in 1932 by an RAN boat party under the command of Lieutenant Commander C.G. Little, RAN. The party camped on South Molle Island for about six months while surveying nearby islands and waters. (RAN boat party’s charts)
The name perpetuates a local name as the inlet was well known in the early days of white settlement as a haunt of dugong which fed on the sea-grass flats there. In earlier less sensitive times tourists from the various island resorts were taken to the inlet to hunt the animals. |
