Region Whitsundays

Brief Description:
Abel Point Marina is located in Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays, Queensland. It is the departure point for many day and overnight sailing vacations in the Whitsunday Island Chain.

Detailed Description:
Abel Point Marina is currently expanding to provide for the many sailing and scuba diving adventure tours that use Airlie Beach as their base.

History:
Abell Point (sometimes seen as ‘Abel’ Point) which lies on the western side of Airlie Beach is named after the Abell family, pioneer settlers in the area. Thomas R. Abell senior came to Australia from England in 1869 and in 1904 moved with his family from Bowen to Jubilee Pocket which, in those days, was all that area now occupied by Airlie Beach and Jubilee Pocket. The misspelt version of the name which emerged along the way was perpetuated in road signs for ‘Abel Point’ erected some years ago, an error formally recognised by the Whitsunday Shire Council in 1994 but not before the misspelling had gained general currency.
