We
currently know of positions for the following:
- Master
Class V - Skipper
- Scuba
Dive Instructor
- Scuba
Dive Master/Deck Hand (Paid Position)
There
are often positions going aboard the vessels plying the
waters of the Whitsunday Islands. Jobs vary in pay and duties
but usually unless you're a qualified skipper you won't
make lots of money. These positions best suit someone who
wants to experience a new adventure or who wants to gain
experience for a skippers license.
Because
of our close relationship with many of the vessels here,
we offer a simple FREE service to employers and employees
alike. By filling out our employment form, you give us information
that we can pass to vessels looking for crew, at their request.
As crews change regularly, positions often become available,
possibly at the time you are looking at travelling in this
area.
Your
personal information provided to us is kept in the strictest
confidence and will not be provided to any other person.
Your details will not get you listed on a bulk junk e-mail
list!
Minimum
Requirements.
Most vessels
require the following as a minimum standard before even
considering you for a position.
- You must
have a current work visa, permitting you to work legally
in Australia.
- You must
be prepared to stay with the vessel for around three
months.
- You must
have good presentation skills.
- You must
be good with people.
Positions
Available.
The most common positions include..
- Skipper,
Master Class 4 and 5. This
position is for an already qualified skipper. These
guy's skipper the larger vessels and have many years
of experience on commercial vessels. If you don't know
what this position involves it's because your not qualified
for it!
- Skipper,
Coxswain. This position
is the first step in the skippers positions. It requires
less experience than a Master Class license, but again,
if you don't know what it entails, your not qualified
for it!
- Deck
hand. These positions
require no experience and are often the first step after
a position as Host or Hostess. Sometimes it is possible
to start at this level but usually some experience and
qualifications are required. The position requires early
starts, late nights, usually in a live aboard capacity
and lots of hard, hot sweaty work! It requires self
motivated people who think quickly and act responsibly
in every situation. On vessels with only 2 crew, this
also entails the position of Host/Hostess. Either way,
deck hands usually assist the Host/Hostess when possible.
- Host/Hostess.
This position is usually the starting point for most
people. It involves primarily Cooking, Cleaning and
looking after passengers comforts and entertainment
aboard the vessel, often in a live aboard situation.
It is the first and usually last contact a passenger
has with a vessel and a VERY high standard of people
skills and presentation skills are required by employers.
It is probably the most demanding and longest hours
of work on board.
Girls...
Don't
think that this is a male dominated industry! I have personally
known, worked under, worked with and in charge of some of
the best lady skippers in the region during my time aboard
vessels here. They mostly started in a hostess position
and worked their way up from there. Give it a go !
So
where do I go from here?
Easy,
just fill out the form on the next page! Include information
that is relevent to the above information, this is the most
important information for an employers decision by our experience.
Be sure to include any previous experience in tourism/hospitality
and when you think you will be in Airlie Beach. Send this
to us via e-mail and we will keep you on file. As we are
contacted by employers, we will pass on any résumé's to
them that suit their requirements. If they wish to contact
you, they will. PLEASE don't contact us after you
send us the e-mail. We don't actively search work for you,
we are simply a contact point for employer and employee.
