Experience 3 memorable days exploring the Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays aboard the magnificent Tall Ship 'Solway Lass'. With 10 sails and 5,500 ft sail area, Solway Lass provides you with an authentic and romantic feel of a bygone sailing era.


Solway Lass sails the Whitsundays from Airlie Beach, part of the Cumberland group that form the largest group of coastal islands on the Australian Coast. The Whitsunday Islands offer a treasure trove of colourfull sights, scenes and activities. Guests are welcome to assist 'Hal Yard' aboard Solway Lass, and raise the massive sails ready to make the most of the Whitsundays breezes. There's also the opportunity to take the helm and steer Solway Lass around the Whitsunday Island chain or to the next smooth water anchorage.

Your tour aboard Solway Lass of Airlie Beach,includes time to snorkel, dive, swim, sunbake and explore islands. While at anchor in the Whitsundays aboard Solway Lass, try our famous tarzan rope swing, lay in the bow net or simply enjoy an icy cold drink from the Solway Lass fully licensed bar.



The Guest cabin area aboard Solway Lass is comfortable with air-conditioning, separate male/female bathrooms and 11 private double, twin or shared cabins. The cabins on Solway Lass are appointed with brass lamps, cedar and oak timbers, personal reading lamps and comfy beds.

Every trip on Solway lass the vessel will make every endeavour to visit the world famous Whitehaven Beach located on Whitsunday Island , the largest of the 74 islands in the Whitsundays.

Stretching over seven kilometres, Whitehaven Beach features pure white silica sand fringed by brilliant blue water. Consistently recognised in the top 10 beaches of the world, Whitehaven Beach offers visitors a chance to experience the unique beauty of the Whitsundays. .

At the northern end of Whitehaven Beach is Hill Inlet, a stunning inlet where the tide shifts the sand and water to create a beautiful fusion of colours. Many people claim Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach are the most beautiful places they've ever seen.


History

Built in Holland in 1902 of German Steel with Timber decking as a sail powered cargo vessel. Originally named Stina. In 1905 sold and renamed to "Adolf", working in and around the Baltic and North Sea. In 1915 Solway Lass was seized as a prize of war by the British and used as a Q-Ship during WWI. At the end of WWI, "Solway Lass" worked as a coal merchant, produce and stone carrying vessel between Liverpool England and Scottish Ports. In 1924 sold to a Scottish firm in the Solway Firth where she was renamed Solway Lass.

When WWII broke out the Germans seized Solway Lass as a prize of war where she was used to supply their armed forces. During the war Solway Lass hit a mine and was badly damaged, however the Germans refloated and repaired her because Solway Lass was useful as a sail-powered icebreaker. After WWII Solway Lass served in the South Pacific as a Cargo Vessel.

In 1983 a Sydney Businessman purchased Solway Lass in Fjii. Between 1983 and 1985 SL was totally rebuilt and in 1988 took pride of place in the 1st Fleet re-enactment of the Tall Ships into Sydney Harbour.


Whitsunday Charters

In early 1999 Solway Lass was remodelled for overnight 3 day & 3 night sailing holidays in the Whitsundays. Solway Lass is AIR CONDITIONED and has 11 cabins. These cabins are private double/twin and share and feature teak and cedar feature walls along with Jarrah timber trims. Solway Lass also has a bar area serving icy cold drinks and an outdoor dining room which boasts the most beautiful Whitsunday views.

Solway Lass provides guests with the opportunity to experience sailing as it was 101 years ago with the 10 sails and 5500 square feet of sail area. Guests are welcome to assist the crew hoist the sails and steer the ship, or otherwise just relax on the huge decks and take in the views the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park provides. Lay in the bow net while the water washes 12ft below and onto the bow. Relax in the bar area, read a book, make new friends, enjoy an icy cold drink. When at anchor, have a swing on our 50ft Tarzan Rope....Ahhhhhhh! A unique way to enter the water.
